BALL CHAIR

BALL CHAIR

Design by Eero Aarnio

The Ball Chair - or Globe Chair as it's called sometimes - was designed by using one of the most simple geometric forms - the ball. Cutting of a part and fixing it at one point Eero Aarnio comes to a remarkable result - a completely unconventional shaped chair: A Ball Chair is a "room within a room" with a cozy and calm athmosphere, protecting outside noises and giving a private space for relaxing or having a phonecall. Turning around its own axis on the base the view to the outer space is variable for the user and thus he is not completely excluded from world outside.

BUBBLE CHAIR

BUBBLE CHAIR

Design by Eero Aarnio

Based on the idea of the Ball Chair the Bubble Chair is a reduction of this design. As Ludwig Mies van der Rohe said: Less is more! A masterpiece of reduction. After Aarnio had made the Ball Chair he wanted to have the light inside it and so he had the idea of a transparent ball where light comes from all directions. The only suitable material is acrylic which is heated and blown into shape like a soap bubble.. And again the name was obvious: BUBBLE.

PASTIL CHAIR

PASTIL CHAIR

Design by Eero Aarnio

The Pastil shape can be looked at from many angles. The initial idea could be the same as in a Screw Table i.e. the product shape comes from a small sweetie, pastil, but in this case the idea was, that a lot of empty, cushioned space is sent to the other side of the world inside the Ball Chair. A new round chair would fit in this space, and so the diameter of the Pastil is the same as the opening of the Ball Chair. It belongs to the collection „100 chairs which changed the history“.

PENELOPE

PENELOPE

Design by Charles Pollock

In 1982, designer Charles Pollock created a true design classic in Penelope. Art lovers have probably pricked up their ears at the name: Pollock is a brother of the painter Jackson Pollock. The American created a revolutionary, technical and formal design for castelli. Italian design is the epitome of aesthetic creativity. In the 60s and 70s, this style reached its peak. An incredible number of ideas and products began its triumphal march around the world. Design, and the joy in experimentation are still inseparably linked with Italy even today. Manufacturers who were prepared to take risks, rebellious avantgarde architects, and the new materials and product technology were a hotbed for a unique innovative impulse.

PLIA

PLIA

Design by Giancarlo Piretti

The manifestation of the new era focussing on plastic material - that's how Plia was acclaimed in 1967 when it was launched at the Furniture Fair in Milan. The chair met with so much approval among the visitors to the fair that they walked away with some of them without asking. Considering this unorthodox compliment, the chairs were then chained up to be on the safe side. With Plia, the Italian designer Giancarlo Piretti redefined the folding chair. His development of the "3-disc hinge" is considered a stroke of genius. The combination of steel frame and transparent cellidor plastic paved the way for the chair to become a cult object. The chair stands for the realisation of "democratic design" and is an integral part of the design department of MoMA. Piretti, who was also named "Thonet of the 20th Century" went down in design history when creating his chair - millions of which have been produced so far.
